I’ve seen some crazy and stupid things in my day but this one really takes the cake for me. I mean I know that a lot of people like the books and are happy for the movie. I also know that a lot of people think the books are basically porn and that no one should want to read it or continue to read them, let alone have a movie about them. However, I think we’re really missing the point here in the end.
If you don’t want to read the book, don’t read the damn book. If you don’t like the story it’s telling or what you “think” it may contain then don’t read the book. The same thing goes for the movie based off the book. You don’t have to see the movie, you don’t have to watch the trailers. You can completely avoid ever doing anything with the book or movie by simple not doing anything with it!
Instead, there are some people near me who want a local cinema company to protest the release of Fifty Shades of Grey. Yes that’s right, they want to stop the cinema from airing or having the movie in their theater. The reasoning…
“Fifty Shades of Grey presents pornographic material, romanticizes sexual abuse, and centers on the themes of BDSM (Bondage, Discipline/Dominance, Submission/Sadism and Masochism).”
And while yes that is all true, right down to the BDSM, there is no way a shape or form of sexual abuse in the movie. Ana is never raped by Christian, nor does she protest anything he does without tell him so. Also lets keep in mind that this is a work of FICTION people. They’re also protesting the fact that it’s inappropriate for a public cinema theater. Like it’s “G rated” or something. Fifty Shades of Grey has been given an R rating. So you have to be 17 or older to see and at this point, really should know the story before you want into the theater. Also this movie isn’t going to be just sex, it’s going to tell the story of Ana and Christian too.
Yes I have read the books. Yes I want to see the movie. No I do not care what you think of either. No I wont let this petition stop me from seeing the movie. And the cinema company they want to send this to could give two craps about what they think is right to be playing. They want to make money people, not make the less than 400 of you that have signed it happy.
I have a few Facebook friends who have actually signed this thing. And while I agree with freedom of speech (case in point my entire blog), at this point can’t we just agree that you don’t want to see it. And that no one is going to make you see it? They need at least 5000 for the petition to get sent and they have less than a month to get it done. I just am in awe that logically they can’t just say “We’re not going to see that movie” and be done with it.
If you want to read the petition or sign it (which go ahead I think this is entertaining as hell) please click HERE.
